Hinged Box Pendant

Creator Haven LLC
41-B, Hangar Way
Watsonville, CA 95076

There are as many approaches to box construction as there are artists who make them, and master metal clay artist Pam East has created a box project focusing on intricate, delicate details. This challenging, multi-layered project will greatly expand our metal clay skill set as we build a hinged box featuring tiny gears, tiny gemstones, and tight, unobtrusive hinges with smooth action. The precise work will include rolling, texturing and cutting the clay; sanding and prepping greenware elements; creating and fitting mitered corners; and building small, functional components like hinges, cotter pins, and clasp elements. We’ll also be flush setting tiny stones, designing and constructing an open bail, and learning how to mask stamps and texture plates for unique results. Not into steampunk? Choose a garden inspired theme instead with tiny floral-themed components!

This workshop is intended for students with recent successful metal clay experience, including rolling clay to an even thickness, working with stamps and templates, and proficiency with greenware finishing and using syringe. We’re providing all the tools, equipment and materials you’ll need to complete the projects, so you just have to bring eye magnification and have fun!

We’re delighted to be welcoming master metal clay artist Pam East back to the studio with a fun weekend project! There are as many ways to create a box as there are artists who make them, and Pam will show us her method with this creative shadow box pendant. Along the way, we’ll explore a full range of metal clay skills, including rolling, texturing and cutting clay; sanding and prepping greenware elements; and creating and fitting mitered corners.  We’ll flex our metal clay muscles as we design and build a unique scene inside our boxes, using her methods for making, refining, and adding tiny elements. She’ll also cover the best ways to achieve a great patina, and her tips and tricks to polish detailed work. As an added bonus, we’ll design and build a matching pair of earrings for a completely unique jewelry set.

This workshop is open to all levels! If you’ve never tried metal clay, this is your chance to learn from one of the top metal clay instructors teaching today. And if you have past metal clay experience, we guarantee you’ll learn something new from Pam’s exhaustive library of methods, tips, and tricks. We’re providing all the tools, equipment and materials you’ll need to complete the projects, so you just have to bring eye magnification and have fun!

Innovative copper and bronze clays contain pure metal powder mixed with an organic binder, allowing you to work it like clay. It can be molded, sculpted, rolled, textured, and more. The binders burn away when fired, leaving pure metal. Make earrings, pendants, and other jewelry, guided in topics including molding the clay, construction techniques, firing, and finishing. All levels welcome.
